Nestled within the enchanting Manistee National Forest, Heart of the Forest is the perfect basecamp for outdoor adventure. Paddle the Big Manistee, Little Manistee, or Pine River by canoe, kayak, or raft, explore the scenic Big “M” trails, Pine River Corridor, or North Country Trail, or spend the day birdwatching and searching for prized morel mushrooms in the spring. However you choose to explore, you’ll find unforgettable experiences waiting just beyond your campsite.

Our love for the outdoors goes hand in hand with our commitment to protecting it. As stewards of this beautiful landscape, we strive to promote sustainable practices throughout the campground while encouraging guests to do the same. Simple actions, like minimizing exterior lighting after 10 p.m., help preserve our dark skies and reduce light pollution, allowing everyone to enjoy brilliant star-filled nights. We’re also expanding our environmental initiatives by creating pollinator gardens throughout the park, featuring native Michigan wildflowers and plants that support local wildlife and healthy ecosystems.

At Heart of the Forest, we also believe in finding the right balance between staying connected and truly unplugging. That’s why we offer satellite Wi-Fi throughout the park, along with thoughtfully placed digital detox zones for guests who want to set aside their screens and reconnect with nature. You’ll also enjoy a clean, centrally located bathhouse, an onsite food truck serving delicious fare Wednesday through Sunday, and a welcoming community fire pit where old friends reconnect, new friendships begin, and evenings are best spent sharing stories beneath a canopy of stars.

The Retro Trailer

Originally built as a mobile home, the trailer has been lovingly transformed into a stylish retreat where vintage details meet contemporary convenience. From the original hardware to the carefully selected vintage-style appliances, every element has been chosen to preserve the trailer’s nostalgic appeal while providing all the comforts of a modern getaway. The heart of the space is what we affectionately call our “retro mod” kitchen—a charming, fully equipped space stocked with dishes, cookware, utensils, and everything you’ll need to prepare and enjoy your favorite meals.

Designed to accommodate up to four guests, the Retro Trailer features a private bathroom, a full kitchen, comfortable sleeping arrangements, and inviting living spaces that make it easy to relax and reconnect. Whether you’re a mid-century design enthusiast, a lover of unique accommodations, or simply looking for a memorable place to stay, this vintage gem offers an experience you won’t find anywhere else.

RVs, Van Camping, Pop Ups & More

Whether you’re traveling with a compact camper, a fully equipped motorhome, or anything in between, Heart of the Forest offers a variety of vehicle camping sites to suit your setup.

Our 30/50 Amp electric sites are ideal for larger RVs and motorhomes that require higher electrical capacity. With reliable power available at your campsite, these sites are perfect for guests who don’t require water or sewer hookups and prefer a more traditional camping experience with the comfort of electricity.

Our 20 Amp sites are perfect for smaller trailers, camper vans, truck campers, and pop-up campers with more modest power requirements. They offer a simple, comfortable camping experience while keeping you close to all the amenities the park has to offer.

For those traveling with larger rigs or towing a trailer, our pull-through full hook-up sites make arriving and departing a breeze. With water, sewer, and electrical connections at your site—and no backing in required—these spacious sites are especially convenient for big RVs, fifth wheels, and guests making a quick overnight stop.

Tent Camping

Whether you’re chasing a digital detox, a weekend under the stars, or a basecamp for your next adventure, our tent camping sites offer the perfect place to slow down and settle in.

Choose from 20 Amp electric sites for a few extra creature comforts or rustic, non-electric sites for a more unplugged camping experience. Every campsite features a level tent pad, a picnic table for meals and games, and a fire ring that’s ready for campfire stories, toasted marshmallows, and late-night conversations. With a mix of sunny spaces and shady, tree-lined sites, you can find the setting that fits your camping style.

When the day winds down, freshen up with a hot shower in our secure keypad-entry bathhouse, giving you the comfort of modern amenities while still enjoying the outdoors.
